Why This Takes Longer Than It Should
Bank and credit card statements almost always arrive as password-protected PDFs. That's a sound design for delivery, but it gets in the way when you need to import them into budgeting software, bundle them as tax attachments, or hand them to an accountant — every open prompts for the password again. Removing that prompt on your own machine, for a file whose password you know, is a legitimate operation.
What's Actually At Risk Here
- ✓The tool assumes you already know the password. It cannot open a file without one.
- ✓Statement PDFs list account numbers, balances, and counterparties. Uploading one to an unlock service is by far the larger risk.

Where People Get Tripped Up

- This removes the open password. PDFs that only carry editing restrictions work differently.
- OFFiler cannot add a password to a PDF (pdf-lib provides no encryption API). To re-protect a file, use the ZIP tool's AES-256 password-protected archive instead.
